The Castellum                                       South gate of the Castellum

<>It is only in the 4th century that Horbourg-Wihr became a strategic military place: it is at this period that the Castellum was built, perhaps between 330 and 370, to protect the region from the Germanic invasions (Fuchs 1994).

.

The castellum formed a 170 by 170 m square, on a 297 ha area. The walls are made from sandstone coming from the Vosges Mountains.

We do not know how long the castellum has existed. It may have been destroyed by the Vandals, Alains or Sueves during winter 406/407, or by the Huns in 451.

<>The discovery of coins has made possible the dating of the different period of the site (Fuchs 1994).
