Introduction

The archaeological site of Horbourg-Wihr has many interesting features. First of all, the vestiges of the 1stcentury Gallo-Roman city and the 4th Century Roman Castellum are important legacy of the history of the Alsatian region. Secondly, the different phases of the discovery of the site illustrate the development of archaeology from an amateur activity to a professional discipline.
Many difficulties have undermined the discoveries of this site. Because of the continuous occupation of the site and the strategic position of its location marked by wars and invasions, the interpretations of the excavations have not been easy. The artifacts found during the first excavation were disseminated into private collection and few evidences remain today. Finally, the high urbanization of this zone prevents the complete excavation of the site.
